Dental Implant Dayton

What Is A Dental Implant and what are the benefits of dental implants?

Traditionally when teeth are removed, the resultant space is bridged by crowning (capping) the tooth on either side of the space and cementing a replacement that consists of three teeth; two crowns (caps) joined together by a false tooth in the middle. This “bridging” method is appropriate for many applications. However, another wonderful alternative is available. An implant is simply an artificial root replacement upon which a tooth can be made. Tested and researched for nearly a century now, implants in their present form, are nearly 100% successful.

Unlike a bridge that must be cleaned by threading floss underneath the false tooth, a tooth placed over an implant can be flossed like any other tooth. There is also no need to cap the teeth on either side of the space. Implants are extremely strong and can withstand the chewing forces that exist in the back of the mouth. Implants can also be used to hold dentures securely in place. Instead of putting crowns on the implants, implants with “fastener-tops” can snap the denture into place from the underside. Only two implants in the eye tooth region of the lower jaw can make a night and day difference in your denture wearing experience.

Recover the pleasure of eating out with your friends. You will feel ten years younger and find a new smile on your face. So if you are a new denture wearer or have an older denture that will not stay in place, implants can relieve so much of the anxiety associated with wearing dentures.

How involved is the process?

Placement of the average implant usually requires the same local anesthetic and time commitment as a typical filling, however, more than two implants may require other steps.

May I eat as usual while the site heals?

Yes, simply wait until normal feeling returns and eat on the other side for a short time with common sense gentleness. The implant is then allowed to “integrate” into it’s surroundings for usually 2 - 3 months. Then Dr. Deister will make a crown (cap) to attach to the implant, which will take two appointments.

What teeth can be replaced with an implant & crown?

Any tooth in the mouth.
